Activities in San Blas |
| |
|
| |
Activities in san blas are numerous and based on 3 axes:
- The water sports and sea life encounters
- The Indian culture discovery
- Time to relax and the fresh meals.
Sailing in the San Blas is a real pleasure though distances are short (1 to 3 hours per day or more is you ask for it!). Most of the yachts (except maybe Liberty III) are doing really well under sails and captains love to teach the basics to starters or just let the pro sail by themselves. For the one interested in making the route, San Blas offer hundreds of traps but … captains always keep an eye discretely! Feel free to steer, to raise the sail, etc… but just never try to hire a bare boat in San Blas: none are available! Anyway tips from Captains are really worth and save one time to find the best shelter or the best wall to snorkel. Communication with Indians is also easier: speaking Kuna Indian is a real plus! Every night is spent at anchorage: anyway, San Blas have no marina! The best time for sailing is when the trade winds blows: from December thru April. For the one really found of sailing and blue water cruise, we recommend the 3 weeks gran cruise Panama San Blas / Cartagena Colombia and back.

Once moored, and grace of the equipment supplied on each boat (mask, tuba and flippers), snorkeling is a really easy access to all: from starter in 3 feet of water to apnea divers down to the 100 feet. Note that Kuna Indians do not allow scuba diving: anyway the there's no decompression box over there. Nevertheless, spear fishing is admitted and passionate will appreciate the red snapper, jack or grouper hunt. If you do not fish, most skippers will for you: most of the meals are on basis of the catch of the day.

 |
Animals are also numerous and very interesting to observe:
Bird watching concerns the famous sea birds but also the birds from the rivers more numerous, Sea life is represented with spotted eagle rays, barracudas, snappers, jacks, groupers, starfishes, ballists, nurse sharks, but also clown fishes, parrot fishes, and a myriad of smaller fishes from all colors. Coral from all colors are also great interest of the animal kingdom: |

| |
The San Blas offer gorgeous "walls" from 3 feet to 100 feet excellent for snorkeling, apnea or spear fishing.
One of the most appreciated activities is the Rio upstream: with the boat's dinghy (or kayak) or a Kuna Indian dugout, guests enter the river Diablo (or Carti) and slowly penetrates the tropical forest with songs of birds; fugitive movements in the high bamboos ands sometimes even the far roaring monkeys, a closer spider monkey or sometimes a Toucan. Access to the river can be limited regarding season (if few water or after rain in the mountains for example) and is available only for 10 days trip minimum.

Swimming in turquoise waters is just surrealistic! It seems just like a swimming pool but with no Clorox and real star fish on the white sand carpet! It is such pleasure to slide in the fresh morning water -on back of the boat- while others are still asleep. It is such a healthy exercise to dedicate 1 to 2 hours a day swimming. |
|
| |
 |
Kids always appreciate shallow waters to play, swim and have fun: each of the 1000 beaches of San blas offers a sand bottom less than 3 feet where kids can safely play most of the time with their new friends Kuna: having fun is polyglot!
Kayaking is the best way to get to a desert island, to a favorite reef but also to practice a complete sport: most yachts have twin seats kayak |
|
| |
(plse consult the fleet page to check). The ocean kayak is a real independence for a couple and a great toy for kids. Guests have also right to get to the river with kayak.
Walking in the white sand of the San Blas beaches with, on one side the turquoise quiet water and, on the other side, the coconut palm trees is really relaxing and a real feeling of freedom: can you image walking around an island without having to avoid one single towel and body!
|
| |
 |
Two hours before sunset, it is generally time for a beach volley: captain will set the net between two palm trees and the play will start against the local Kuna Indians. Generally they do win: they might be small but are really good at this exercise.
While sailing the captains will trawl and this might be the catch of the day! Nevertheless, they have another chance when yacht is at anchorage: |
|
| |
spear fishing is excellent for the one who knows this sport. If you do, do not hesitate to bring your gun to participate to the dives with captains. Fishing is very important: it is the basis of the meals!

When it is time for meals, we are talking seriously: cooking is something important aboard all yachts. Regarding its nationality, each crew will let you discover some specialties but the basis is always the fresh fish, lobsters and the famous san blas giant crab. The yachts are supplied directly from Panama City of fresh tropical fruits, fresh vegetables, best meat in town, etc… During your stay aboard, the drinks will be included: Chilean or Argentinean red and white wines, purified water, local beers, coca cola, local dark rum, fruit juices … Please read the general conditions aboard for more details. If you like cigars or fine drinks, please carry them (you can buy them in Panama City).
Most of the guests like to relax while in vacations: there is no special recipe but note that hammocks, deck cousins, good installation in your cabin, a floating mattress, etc… are good tools to sleep, read, redo the world or just close your eyes and feel the soft sun tan your relaxed body… |
| |
 |
The Kuna world and its traditions is a very important aspect of the San Blas Sailing cruise: grace of your captain / guide, you will have access to the famous crowded traditional villages but also to remote families. You will be invited at the best molas makers place (like Lisa in Mamardup
and Benencio in Mormakeutupu). Best is to get to the Kuna Indians page to learn more about this ancestral culture and strong tradition. |
|
| |
You will be surprised by the children always playing happily around you, the old women and their severe look, the younger women expecting the first little detail to start laughing and the casual men.
Now take a time to browse through our fleet!
